Faith Relations Team Description
Primary Function:
Develop long-term partnerships with religious congregations to initiate or increase donations and volunteers, leading to house sponsorships.
Commitment:
Approximately 8 hours per month for 1 year.
Responsibilities:
Attend Faith Relations Team meetings.
Develop key contacts in church congregations to initiate or increase involvement with HfHVC. Involvement should be understood as any or all of the following: financial contributions, committee membership, hosting functions (including food), and construction volunteering.
Follow up on leads supplied to committee by staff, Board of Directors, mailings and other committees.
Provide congregations with promotional materials and place regular announcements in bulletins and newsletters.
Make presentations to congregations to recruit volunteers and workdays.
Recognize that it takes time to build relationships. If a faith group says that they do not support Habitat because we strive to include all people (without religious discrimination), remove them from the list. Otherwise continue to communicate on a regular basis, even if an organization does not respond with a donation or by sponsoring a work day. You are building awareness of who we are and what we do.
Promote our "Theology of the Hammer" philosophy and that working with members of other faiths is a great way to break down prejudices. We build community through focusing on what we have in common-concern for the well-being of all people. Encourage low-income members of all religious communities to apply for home ownership.
Qualifications and Skills:
Public speaking skills.
Experience with outreach ministries helpful.
Clergy, laity, and chairs of mission outreach committees are ideal.
Active involvement with interfaith councils also beneficial.
Warm, friendly, outgoing personality.
Ability to work with diverse groups of people.
