Family Support Team

Primary Function:
Develop programs to assist partner families through Habitat program and prepare them for responsibilities of homeownership.

Commitment:
Approximately 6 hours per month for 1 year.

Responsibilities:
  • Attend Family Support Committee meetings.
  • Develop and implement family support programs that help families understand Habitat policies, including any options available regarding site selection, house floor plans, choices of fixtures and appliances, etc.
  • Develop homeowner educational workshops and manuals on topics such as: budgeting/finance/debt management; on-site orientation on home systems, maintenance and repair prior to closing; understanding mortgage, escrow, deed, homeowners' insurance, property tax, and homestead exemption; how to handle changes in life circumstances that affect payment of mortgage; garbage pick-up and utilities; zoning regulations; neighborhood associations; voting registration and districts; landscape maintenance; pet care; and wills and estate planning.
  • Develop means of evaluating workshops to determine effectiveness and make improvements as needed.
  • Recruit, train and assign family mentors.
  • Review reports from Family Support regarding progress of sweat equity and mortgage delinquency. Take appropriate measures, including calls or letters, per policy of staff and/or Board of Directors. If adequate improvement is not made, turn over to Board of Directors for further action regarding de-selection or foreclosure.
  • Comply with confidentiality policy and never share private homeowner information with anyone outside of Habitat organization.
  • Attend all relevant roundtable and training sessions approved by Executive Director.

    Qualifications and Skills:
  • Understand the difference between supporting and enabling.
  • Public speaking, presentation and/or teaching experience very helpful.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Flexible schedule.
  • Sound knowledge of all aspects of Habitat program.
  • Warm, friendly, caring, patient personality.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Dedication to the goals and mission of Habitat for Humanity.
